A Piece of Work
WNYC / MoMA podcast
For many museum visitors, encountering a bicycle wheel attached to a stool, an all-white painting, a text-based work of conceptual art or documentation of a performance not only provokes questions but reactions of skepticism, frustration or even dismissal. MoMA saw this as an opportunity to catalyze discussion and debate about works of art in the collection across media, partnering with WNYC Studios to produce a 10-episode podcast series.
The podcast is hosted by Abbi Jacobson (Broad City, Carry this Book) in conversation with curators, educators and many others outside the art world. It adopts a curious, non-authoritative and humorous tone and feature different (even conflicting) perspectives from across disciplines including artists’ voices, critical responses, visitor feedback, and more. Each episode explores a few works in MoMA’s collection through the lens of a theme (including monochromes, abstraction, design, everyday objects, media, performance, light, minimalism, pop, and text-based works), inspired by questions posed in response to modern and contemporary art.
