The microsite for Pipilotti Rist: Sip my Ocean, presented from 1 November 2017 to 18 February 2018, gave exhibition visitors a wide-ranging experience: it offered timely and accurate information as well as immersive interpretive content.
As a pre-visit experience, it offered an initiation to the artist’s work and life, and allowed visitors to plan their visit and buy tickets. In-gallery, the site functioned to provide rich audio content, as the artist, Pipilotti Rist, talked the visitor through selected artworks in the show. Post-visit, visitors could listen to an extended interview between the artist and the museum’s youth guides, for a different perspective on the exhibition.
The design brief was to be clear, concise and accessible, while retaining the vibrancy and complexity that characterises the artist’s work. We achieved this through bold design and simplified navigation. Fast-loading pages and media, courtesy of the React build, make the site responsive to browsing behaviour, especially when in-gallery on mobile devices.
Rich media about artworks is a focus of the site, and is delivered to the user in a contextualised way. Audio interviews – fully captioned in a floating design that retains the ability to scroll – are accessed via a simplified map of the gallery space, for easy navigation. For visitors who use AUSLAN (Australian sign language), the site offers a series of videos filmed in AUSLAN that covers the same material about artworks offered to other visitors.
