Custom-built Collection Management Database for a Small Institution

Eve Perry, Joan Mitchell Foundation, USA

The Joan Mitchell Foundation built a custom database solution using FileMaker software that supports collection management, a catalogue raisonné project, and serves as the entry point for the Foundation’s image management. Many cultural heritage institutions, particularly small institutions, may face the same challenge the Foundation did in finding off-the-shelf solutions that serve their needs closely enough to justify the high cost. The demonstration of the Foundation’s database aims to initiate a dialogue around the Foundation’s experience with a custom-built approach and discuss strategies and lessons learned with others who are considering similar projects.
