South Asian Canadian Digital Archive: Creating a Shared Culturally Democratic Space Online

Tzu-I Chung, Royal British Columbia Museum, Canada

This presentation explores and highlights the potential and importance of creating a South Asian Canadian Digital Archive through cross-sectoral collaboration. South Asian Canadian heritage is significant to our collective provincial and national history within the global context. However, the communities have been historically underrepresented in GLAM institutions. The creation of this Digital Archive proposes to serve as an online portal for placing the South Asian Canadian community at the centre, and generating resources to serve local, regional, national and global users. In tandem with the work to create the digital archive are the needs for ongoing efforts to establish and expand South Asian Canadian art, artifact, library and archive collections to be preserved for, and shared with, present and future generations. Inviting community commentary and interaction, this portal therefore should be designed through sustainable collaborative relationships among GLAM institutions, research institutions, and communities for reaching its fullest potential. There is an opportunity to build an innovative online space across sectors and for generations to come.
